4.5.3 Bowen’s Disease and Skin Cancer

Keratosis areas on the palms and soles, or spotted melanosis on the body, may deteriorate and lead to surface roughness, erosion, ulceration, pain, and surrounding skin flush and finally result in Bowen’s disease or skin cancer (Fig. 4.6) [11]. This process can take as long as 30–40 years. Bowen’s disease shows up in single or multiple sites in the skin. Skin cancer is relatively distinctive in endemic arsenic poisoning. The lesions are frequently multiple and involve unexposed areas of the body, contrary to non-arsenical skin cancer which usually presents as a single lesion that occurs in exposed parts of the body. Pathological diagnosis for Bowen’s disease and skin cancer only can be made by biopsy.
